WIS Expo – 2022
WIS Interviews – 2022

A Women In Sport (WIS) event like no other, organised by Weightlifting Ireland and funded by Sport Ireland. An event inspired by the increase in female participation within the sport of weightlifting.

Weightlifting Ireland’s biggest event in 2022 for women to recognise strength. Our aim was to make strong women visible worldwide, to inspire the next generation of strong women.

Irrespective of gender, age, body type or size, it was important for us to highlight all the different female athletes and members we have within our association. From our international level athletes (both young & old) to masters athletes, under-age athletes and everyone in between.

This event highlights the strength of our female members, athletes, coaches, officials and board members. Our aim is to engage and make connections with our female members in person and online – to inspire the next generation of strong women. #WomenInSportIRE

Transition Year (TY) School Partnership Programme

Weightlifting Ireland, in partnership with Sport Ireland and Local Sport Partnerships, have developed a programme to introduce the fundamentals of Olympic Weightlifting to Transition Year students. The Women in Sport TY project is a six week practical programme, led by qualified and experienced coaches, which introduces the Olympic lifts in a fun and safe environment.

Olympic weightlifting, also known as weightlifting, is a sport that involves two movements: the snatch and the clean and jerk. These movements require a combination of strength, power, speed, and technical proficiency, making weightlifting a challenging and rewarding sport.

Some of the benefits of Weightlifting :

  • Increases strength, power, speed & body awareness

  • Improves confidence

  • Uses full body exercises

  • Improves bone density

  • Increases stability

  • Reduces the risk of injury

  • Improves range of movement

  • Increases flexibility

  • Gives a sense of achievement with constant challenges

Here are some of the schools we’ve successfully partnered with to run our TY programme over the years :
